Amex Gold vs Amex Platinum

Offers last updated October 26, 2026. Disclosure: We may earn a referral bonus if you apply through links on this page; it never changes our analysis. Terms apply. Not financial advice.

Both earn American Express Membership Rewards points, but they do opposite jobs. The Gold earns heavily on food spending. The Platinum earns on flights and delivers lounges, status and credits. Many people who hold one eventually hold both — but if you’re choosing one, decide whether you need a card that earns or a card that upgrades your trips.

Same points, different engines

Points from either card pool in the same Membership Rewards account and transfer to the same partners, including Delta, ANA, Singapore Airlines and British Airways. So the question isn’t which currency — it’s which card will put more points in that account for your spending.

The $570 question

The Platinum costs $570 more than the Gold. Its perks can exceed that for frequent travelers, but for someone taking two or three trips a year, the Gold’s earning on food spend often produces more value per dollar of fee.

Why people hold both

The Gold covers everyday spend at 4x on dining and groceries; the Platinum covers airfare at 5x and the travel experience. Together they cover most spending — at a combined fee that only makes sense if you use both cards’ credits.
